In spite of a number of team injuries and a tough season, the Durham Junior Lightning showed both determination and skill over the OWHA Provincial Finals weekend, finishing with two ties and a single loss.
Monday, February 22, 2010 Coaching change to come next season
Undeniably an excellent coach on all fronts, Dino Cagguila will be moving on to be replaced at the helm next season by Wayne McDonald, currently coaching the Durham Midget AA team.
During his storied career at Durham, Dino was twice named as a coach for the Ontario U18 program, was honoured as Volunteer Coach of the Year locally, and was a part of the coaching staff that saw St Mary's Catholic Secondary School make multiple appearances at the Ontario High school finals, resulting in three medal wins there. Good job Dino, and we wish you well at any future endeavors!
Durham played the last three regular season games over a long weekend from February 12-15, completing their season with a trio of losses. In an away game against Cambridge, Durham was on the losing end 8-0, followed by a home game against Stoney Creek on Saturday February 13th, with a 7-1 result. In that game, Caitlyn Nat scored Durham's lone marker at 3:49 of the second period off assists from Alix Vallee and Jenn Lawrence.
January was a cold month for the Durham Junior Lightning as they were frozen out from wins in a four game stretch.
On January 15, the Lightning travelled to Lakeshore Lions Arena to take on the Etobicoke Junior Dolphins and were shut out, in a 5-0 loss. Chantal Bicket and Victoria Powers shared goalie duties with Powers recording the loss.
Friday, January 15, 2010 Tough Trio for the Junior Lightning
Last week's games against the Hamilton Junior Hawks (Jan 8), the Cambridge Junior Fury (Jan 9) and the Markham Junior Stars (Jan 12) were a tough trio for the Junior Lightning.
The first tilt, against Hamilton, was a road game and played on small ice at Inch Park. Tiffany Toong put the Lightning on the scoreboard at 3:46 in the first, off assists from Katie Gaskin and Candace Robbescheuten, but the Lightning was not able to prevent goals from Hamilton in both the first and second period, leaving them with a 1:2 deficit. Chantal Bicket stopped 32 shots.
In June 2007, DWGHA received a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in the amount of $41,500. DWGHA is grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support. The budget includes funds specifially earmarked for the purchase of association goalie equipment, select jerseys and socks, coaching staff training and development, team practice equipment.
