In spite of a number of team injuries and a tough season, the Durham Junior Lightning showed both determination and skill over the OWHA Provincial Finals weekend, finishing with two ties and a single loss.
Durham came out looking for a win against Aurora and played a tight game, with no scoring through the first period, even though Durham fired 14 shots on net and Vic Powers faced 17 from Aurora. In the second Sarah Thomson fired in a shot off an assist from Nicole Hishon, who dug a puck out of the corner and fed it out front. Penalty trouble in the third gave Aurora a five on three advantage which they were able to capitalize into a goal, ending with a 1-1 tie.
Bouyed by their stellar effort in game one, Durham faced the Mississauga Chiefs in the second tilt. Powers continued in net. Durham opened the scoring in the first, with a goal from Jocelynne Hudgins, assisted by Shannon Stewart, but Mississauga evened things up with a power play goal with just 49 seconds left in the first period.
In the second Mississauga took over the lead, with another power play goal, then followed up with two additional markers. Powers faced 24 shots over the first two periods. Chantal Bicket took over goaltending in the third, stopping all Mississauga's shots and shutting them out, ending the game with a 4-1 loss.
The last, and must win game for Durham was against Nepean. Auroa had been eliminated after tying with Durham, and this game would determine who would move on. The Lightning ran into penalty trouble early and Chantal Bicket managed 9 poewer play shots before being screened and allowing a goal. Durham picked up 2 power play goals of their own in the second, one from Shannon Stewart assisted by Carly Marchment and Jenn Lawrence, and a second on an unassisted goal by Alix Vallee. Nepean tied it up on a delayed penalty call with a backhand shot into the top corner.
In the third, Nepean again scored on a power play but less than a minute later Shannon Stewart raced down the right wing and scored the tying goal assisted again by Marchment and Lawrence. While dominating and providing pressure throughout the remaining minutes of the third, Durham just couldn't put the puck in the net, ending the game in a 3-3 tie. It was a great effort from the team!
