2008 Dream Team
|
Thank you all for a very successful night last night. Although we did not originally set out to make this a fundraiser, due to all of our generosity we were able to raise $2,320.00 for the Hospital for Sick Children.
We wish to thank all of the volunteers for making this such as a great event. This includes Executive Members and DWGHA Members that took the time to make this something to be proud of. A special thank you to:
- Fran Ryder, Pat Nicholls, and Bill Williamson (OWHA): With the busy schedules that they have they still found time to come come out and lend support
- Mayor Hazel McCallion and Mayor Steve Parish for taking the time to come out and say some kind words.
- Karen Hughes and Dan Church: Two very important coaches in the Ontario hockey world who gave their time last night right to the very end. The girls benefited from their presence last night and will have something more to aspire to with their hockey.
- DWGHA Alumni: Lyndsey Ryan, Lindsay Hill, Quinn Caggiula, Mary Modeste, Laura Watt, and Jen Sadler
- The local businesses that donated were: Train-like-a-Pro, Source for Sports, Phoenix Enterprises, Boston Pizza, Xilarate Sport Drinks. A special thanks to George and Karen Purchmajer of Majer Signs for donating all of the graphic and signs and posters. They spent many hours of over the last two weeks to give this event a professional look.
- Alexa, Adam and Lisa: Words cannot express how DWGHA feels about your family and what you are going through right now. Alexa and her courage with this battle against a terrible disease is truly inspirational. The hockey community did its best to rally around you during this time. It is our hope and prayers that make a speedy full recovery and know that all you ever have to do is pick up the phone if you need us. We will always be there for you.
To quote the President of DWGHA, Teresa Muto “PRIDE, that is what I feel this morning from last night’s event, pure pride! I have been a member of this association for the past six years and never before have we come together as one like we did last night. DWGHA is not just and organization but a family.”

CANADA’S FIRST EVER NATIONAL WOMEN’S SUMMER UNDER-18 TEAM NAMED FOR THREE-GAME SERIES AGAINST USA IN AUGUST;
JIM FETTER AND DANIELLE GOYETTE NAMED ASSISTANT COACHES; JOHNSTON AND WAKEFIELD NAMED TO NATIONAL WOMEN’S UNDER-22 TEAM
CALGARY – General manager and head coach Melody Davidson, in conjunction with head scout Wally Kozak, announced Canada’s National Women’s Summer Under-18 Team on Friday. The team is made up of the top Canadian female hockey players born in 1990 or later, and will gather for a three-game series against the USA from August 23-26 in Ottawa, ON.
The players were selected to the roster following a national conditioning camp in May and an evaluation camp in July. They were also evaluated over the course of the 2006-07 season by Davidson, along with Kozak, Hockey Canada’s Head Scout for National Women’s Teams, and a number of regional scouts, based on their performances at national camps, the Canada Winter Games and with their club teams. Both goaltenders also took part in a National Women’s Program goaltending camp in June.

Davidson also announced two assistant coaches for the 2007-08 season. Jim Fetter (Waterloo, ON/ Wayne State University, CHA) and Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC/ University of Calgary, ACAC) will both be making their international coaching debuts after assisting at the National Women’s Under-19 Program evaluation camp in July 2007 in Calgary, AB. Fetter is the head coach of the women’s team at Wayne State University, while Goyette will be the head coach of the University of Calgary this season. She has been a player with the National Women’s Team since the 1992 IIHF World Women’s Championship and ranks as the second leading scorer all-time with Team Canada.
“This is a very exciting time for the National Women’s Program, with the Under-18 team becoming a reality this year,” said head coach Melody Davidson. “This summer’s camp was a very competitive one and the players named today should be very proud of their accomplishments. I look forward to working with these players as well as our staff during this series as we begin to prepare for the first-ever IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship.
“I am really looking forward to working with Jim and Danielle as assistant coaches,” added Davidson. “While they are new to coaching at the international level, they both bring great experience to the position.”
Davidson also announced that two players that took part in the Under-19 evaluation camp have been named to the National Women’s Under-22 Team. Forwards Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/ Sudbury Intermediate AA, ON) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/ Etobicoke, NWHL) will be part of the National Women’s Under-22 Team that will face the U.S. National Women’s Under-22 Team in Lake Placid, NY from August 19-26. The remaining members of Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team will be named following the August 9-18th camp to be held at York University in Toronto, ON.
Canada’s National Women’s Summer Under-18 Team includes two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. All twenty-two players participated in the 2007 Canada Winter Games, including six players from Team Ontario, which captured the gold medal. Aside from games against Team Japan during the evaluation camp, none of the players have any international experience.
The 2007-08 season marks the first for the National Women’s Under-18 Team, which will include the three-game series against the USA in Ottawa, ON from August 23-26 and the first-ever IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in January 2008 in Canada (location to be determined). The Under-18 program follows the regional Under-18 program, which has been in place since 2001. The 2007 National Women’s Under-18 Championship will take place in Kitchener, ON from November 7-11.
The National Women’s Under-18 Team is a key component of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, which, along with the Under-22 program, helps identify, evaluate and develop female hockey players for Canada’s National Women’s Team.

“This will be the third time we have gathered this age group together in Calgary for a
conditioning camp,” said Julie Healy, Director of Female Hockey for Hockey Canada.
“Many of these athletes have been training to become elite athletes for a few years now so
we are excited to see what kind of progress they have made. It will be an extremely challenging
three days and will certainly be a big part of us starting to build an invitation list for the 40-player
August camp.” The roster includes 15 players that played on Canada’s 2006-07 National Women’s
Under-22 Team (Hosier, Szabados, Gagnon, Larocque, Smith, Ward, Agosta, Chouinard, Fridfinnson,
Jones, McMeekin, Podloski, Ross, Scanzano, Thibault) and two players with National Women’s Team
experience (Szabados, Agosta) The players will be put through fitness testing, and skating drills over
the course of the three-day camp. There is no opportunity to observe the players during the off-ice
sessions – on-ice times are 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26th and 8:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m.
on Sunday, May 27th, all at Norma Bush Arena in Calgary. The focus for these sessions
will be on
skating techniques, and there will be no pucks on the ice. Hockey Canada will also use
the camp as an
opportunity to get to know the players and give them off-ice training techniques, as
well as nutritional
guidance. Using the 2006-07 on-ice evaluation, performance at this camp and, for
the goaltenders,
performance at the June goalie camp, Hockey Canada officials will make their
selections for an August
camp which will aid them in selecting the National Women’s Under-22 Team
for the 2007-08 season.

WOMEN’S UNDER-19 STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING CAMP
TO BE HELD IN CALGARY
[posted 5.11.07] |
Durham West Girls' Hockey is very proud to announce the following players that have been selected to attend the U19 Camp in Calgary this May. Lisa Plenderleith, Tara Watchorn, Natalie Spooner and Jennifer Wakefield.
CALGARY – Hockey Canada’s National Women’s Team head coach/general manager Melody Davidson, along with National Women’s Program head scout Wally Kozak, announced Friday that 66 of the country’s top 18-and-under women’s players will converge on Calgary from May 11th to 13th for a strength and conditioning/skating camp.
“We are very excited to add this camp to our National Women’s Program schedule,” says Julie Healy, Director of Female Hockey for Hockey Canada. “Our branches have been working hard to grow the female game and the skill level of this group of athletes is a testament to the great work that has already been all across Canada. This camp will focus on teaching these young hockey players about what they will need to do to become elite athletes. Canada is a country full of talented hockey players so we are looking to see how many of them have what it takes to become exceptional athletes.”
The players, at least one from each Canadian province and territory, excluding Nunavut, will be put through fitness testing, and skating drills over the course of the three-day camp. There is no opportunity to observe the players during the off-ice sessions – on-ice times are 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12th and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 13th, all at Norma Bush Arena in Calgary. The focus for these sessions will be on skating techniques, and there will be no pucks on the ice.
Hockey Canada will also use the camp as an opportunity to get to know the players, and give them off-ice training techniques, as well as proper nutritional guidance. Using the 2006-07 on-ice evaluation, performance at this camp and, for the goaltenders, performance at the June goalie camp, Hockey Canada officials will make their selections to a July Under-19 camp, which will lead to selections for the National Women’s Under-18 and National Women’s Under-22 teams for the 2007-08 season.
